What is it about?
This article explores workplace learning and development (L&D) experiences of autistic employees based on a review of research articles. The review identifies key barriers to workplace L&D for autistic employees, as well as factors that facilitate positive L&D outcomes for these employees. The review highlights a gap in human resource development (HRD) research and practice. It explores how HRD can help make workplaces more inclusive for autistic employees and suggests ideas for future research.

Why is it important?
People with autism experience some of the highest unemployment rates of people with disabilities, yet many also report wanting to work. Workplace learning and development (L&D) experiences support positive outcomes for all employees, including job satisfaction, performance, retention, career advancement, and overall well-being. However, autistic employees often encounter barriers that limit their opportunities for and interfere with the potential benefits of L&D. This review shares some of the barriers autistic employees experience, as well as exploring practices that better support autistic employees and make workplaces more inclusive.
