What is it about?

This study examines the effects of employer awards (e.g., fortune 100 Best Employer Award) and online employee review ratings (5-star rating on Glassdoor review) on job seekers' application intention. We showed that both star ratings and employer awards are positively related to organizational prestige. Star-rating is even more important for job seekers with limited hospitality experiences.

Why is it important?

Although more and more job seekers have been searching for employer information on employee review sites like Glassdoor, insufficient attention is paid to how they affect job seekers in research. We showed that those reviews are as important as the established employer award. It calls for increased attention to managing employee reviews.

Perspectives

Despite being theory-driven, the moderating role of an employee's hospitality job tenure is interesting. We are surprised that it only moderates the relationship between star rating and perceived prestige (and job application intention) but not the effects of employer awards. The impact of the star rating and employer awards is so strong that we think organizations are missing out on opportunities to make their job more attractive.
