What is it about?

I met with 40 elderly patients of a rural outpatient health care facility to gather their thoughts/ideas about how the physical health care environment impacted their own participation in their healthcare.

Why is it important?

I have been to two HCD conferences and did not see much, if anything, devoted to the rural healthcare facility in terms of evidence-based design. Also, there is so much focus on patient satisfaction as a primary outcome of evidence-based design and I wanted to look at another outcome: participation

Perspectives

Having attended four national healthcare conferences (National Rural Health and Health Design Conference), I was taken by the lack of interest in the rural health care facility and what levers might exist to impact patient participation (as the general thinking is that participation is itself a lever to improved patient outcomes).
