Why is it important?

It is important to evaluate services such as this to see if they are effective at what they set out to do. In the case of this particular team a number of barriers were highlighted which may reduce their impact on reducing alcohol related hospital admissions. It is important to consider such barriers if commissioning a specialist alcohol hospital liaison team.

Perspectives

I feel that this article highlights the importance of integrating specialist teams into the hospital setting to work with clients who may be at risk of harm from alcohol. One of the reasons why this team was not as effective as they could have been seemed to stem from a lack of understanding from within the hospital around what services the team offered. This led to time being spent on inappropriate clients which reduced their capacity to work with clients who really needed their help.
