What is it about?

We present a technological solution which records the actions in favour or against a judoka during a match. This is significant because our technological solution can be used for improving the performance of the athlete by providing feedback of the behaviour of the judoka during each match.

Why is it important?

The Judo Match Control Sheet is a highly valuable tool used to record the actions in favour or against a judoka during a match. The recorded actions give an idea of what the judoka needs to improve. Nevertheless, since there is nothing better for studying the match than watching it and that the coach himself records the information, usually some small inconveniences may take place, e.g. having to look away from the match in order to write down something or having to write fast in order not to lose details from the match, which may cause an illegible writing. In this work, we present a technological solution which records: each athlete’s matches and scores, penalties, pauses during the match and its actual length of time. These aspects can help to create charts reflecting efforts made by the judoka. Although it is well known that the use of the technology and computer science can improve the athlete performance, the development of computer tools for supporting judo is in an early stage. Our work is targeted to researchers and coaches which are interested in the use of technological solutions in judo training sections and championships for improving the performance of judo players. Moreover the solution is based on recent Information Technology and Communications tendencies which facilitate the use of the application and provide ubiquitous judo match data access.

Perspectives

I have to start saying that I was an active judo player for more than twenty years. The paper shows the effort of a multidisciplinary research group to develop a tool which can be used to improve the performance of judo players. The solution uses the Android technology and cloud computing so it can be used ubiquitously. The development of the tool has been benefited from the judo experience of several of the authors as well as other persons which contribute to the development of the solution.
