What is it about?

This paper discusses the politics around the removal of Palast der Republik, the building that housed the East German parliament, as well as a large multifunctional entertainment centre, in Berlin.

Why is it important?

Official state narratives before and around the time of the removal had mostly reproduced the narrative of progress as opposed to nostalgia, accusing east germans who opposed the building's removal of holding back progress. This narrative had failed to take into account any nuanced understanding of their objections, and this is the critical focus of this article.
