Why is it important?

Data from over 1,000 respondents in 37 different sports was examined. It is important because it explores the experiences of female and male amateur sports officials at all ages. To date, most studies of sports officials focus on male, adult-aged elite (i.e., professional or semi-professional) individuals.

Perspectives

This study has provided a glimpse into the factors that contribute to the retention of amateur sport officials. It does so for the entire group of over 1,000 participants. Importantly, the results at a high level also point to differences in the female versus male experience in officiating, by age group, and by sport category (e.g., invasion games, racing, court sports, fielding sports, etc.). The findings suggest directions for new research.
