Why is it important?
African-American and Hispanic-Americans have an age of first stroke that precedes Caucasians by 10 to 13 years, coupled with higher obesity prevalence and poorly controlled vascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia).
Perspectives
Swipe out Stroke is a foray into improving cultural competency when treating minority populations with cerebrovascular disease. Traditional strategies have had attenuated effects, there is a need for new and innovative treatment paradigms.
