What is it about?

This research explored masters and doctoral students experiences with research ethics in conducting health research. Through descriptive interviews, students' shared what they learned about research ethics, the relationships they had with academic supervisors, and how they managed the research ethics application process.

Why is it important?

Graduate students typically first experience research ethics when they submit their masters or doctoral research projects for ethics approval. Previous studies have explored curriculum content, teaching approaches, and the learning environment related to research ethics. This research examined students’ actual experience with the research ethics process and how they integrated ethical principles into their research practice. The results revealed that academic institutions and Research Ethics Boards can go farther to support novice researchers with ethical practice.

Perspectives

As novice researchers, graduate students often require extra support with research ethics processes. Academic institutions, faculty supervisors, and Research Ethics Boards may provide enhanced support to graduate students if they have a better understanding of the students' experience with research ethics.
