What is it about?

This paper studies the work of Sándor Reisenbüchler, a Hungarian collage animator, active from the mid-'60s until his death in 2004. It claims that his work employed a dialect of the "animated Esperanto", a means by which animators from the early 20th century on communicated across national and linguistic borders. Whereas other animators created an Esperanto in the bodies of characters, Reisenbüchler invented a language in landscapes.

Why is it important?

This is, to my knowledge, the only peer-reviewed English-language publication on a Hungarian animator who worked in Hungary. Its discussion of the animated Esperanto is significant in the era of Pixar. The landscapes of "The Good Dinosaur", in particular, have a similar function to Reisenbüchler's.
