What is it about?

If you don't use a software, how is it possible to understand the way it works? My interest is in animation software, and I wanted to know about how artists work with technology in their creative work. To find out more, I chose to examine Autodesk Maya, which is a 3D animation software widely used in the visual effects, animation and games industries. By interviewing a range of people who use Autodesk Maya I gathered together a lot of information, and here I use this information to explore what animators say about their work with software.

Why is it important?

This is the first study of its kind. Often we (academics who study compute-generated animation) talk rather too superficially about animation software, and my purpose was to get behind the images we see on the screen, and so to understand more about how software works, and how animators use it.

Perspectives

I really enjoyed doing the research for this paper as I talked to so many people who use Autodesk Maya. They took the time to explain to me how they think about their work and their understanding of the software.
