What is it about?

Sleep hygiene education is a typical first line intervention for behavioural sleep problems in children with developmental disabilities, which advises parents on creating optimal sleeping conditions for their child however, there is a lack of research which explains how it works to improve sleep and identifies the best way to deliver it. This research systematically develops a SHE tool for children with DD and a clearer understanding of the complexities of SHE to inform and improve practice.

Why is it important?

Sleep problems affect around 80% of children with DD which are associated with multiple negative outcomes for the child and family. Although SHE is routinely implemented to address sleep difficulties, there is a poor understanding of how the intervention brings about change and it is currently supported by theories based on popular wisdom and parenting advice. In the current cost-conscious climate of prudent healthcare, it is essential that care is evidence based, transparent and relevant to individual need. Therefore, this research aims to build the evidence base supporting SHE to ensure appropriate and effective use.

Perspectives

This publication offers new insight into an established and familiar behavioural sleep intervention and I hope it enhances practitioner's confidence in using it with families.
