What is it about?

The article reports on the re conceptualising of the head teacher in England to a new and emerging position -that of a Chief executive. It traces the work of the a chief executive in an educational setting. the article is part of a larger project which is ethnographic in approach and provides empirical evidence based on a year long association with the CEO. The article provides a typology of the various practices undertaken by the CEO. . It locates the CEO in a complex structure of multi academy trust. I argue that the CEO operates at different levels and in different spaces which I conceive as 'the street'

Why is it important?

The research is important as it is is the first policy scholarship ethnography to investigate an emerging position of the CEO in education using empirical evidence.

Perspectives

As a former head teacher the idea of a chief executive running schools has caused me to think specifically about this new role, with its attendant dimensions. The article is an initial sharing of early findings and hopefully sheds a little more light on this complex role, rooted as it is in the corporate world.
