What is it about?

This article looks at the values of these senior leaders, and how they lead their schools. It does so by gauging their uptake of global citizenship education and the IB learner profile.

Why is it important?

Directors of international schools have lot of freedom and responsibility. They are not answerable to higher powers in the same way that national school heads are. They can and do form the school, choosing its direction, vision and mission. These international schools educate a growing number of elites and global middle classes, yet little to nothing is known of the directors themselves. Who are they? Where do they come from? What do they do?

Perspectives

So much responsibility, and so little information in a field which is so vast (literally the whole world) that it is very difficult to get any real understanding of the phenomenon. In order to do so, I was embedded in an international school for five years in order to better understand how they work. This research draws upon a phenomenological understanding of the field, and undergoes critical analysis.
