What is it about?

We conducted a study of pharmacist assessment and prescribing for patients with uncomplicated urinary tract infections. We enrolled 750 patients from 39 pharmacies in New Brunswick, Canada. The treatment success rate was high (89%). We also found that patients could access their pharmacist for treatment faster than for a physician. Patient satisfaction was very high with the service.

Why is it important?

To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study of pharmacist management of urinary tract infections. Pharmacists' accessibility in the community helped ensure timeliness of treatment and their careful prescribing of antibiotics is important to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Perspectives

This study adds to the growing body of evidence for pharmacist prescribing.
