What is it about?

This paper synthesises and summarises previous mental health help-seeking interventions for men. 7 key techniques of: using role models to convey information, psychoeducational material to improve mental health knowledge, assistance with recognizing and managing symptoms, active problem-solving tasks, motivating behavior change, signposting services, and content that built on positive male traits (e.g., responsibility and strength) are thought to be likely approaches that improve mental health help-seeking in males.

Why is it important?

This is the first systematic review to provide a comprehensive summary of mental health help-seeking interventions. Additionally, we highlight 7 key techniques that can be used when designing future mental health interventions for men to improve their uptake and effectiveness.

Perspectives

We hope this article provides greater clarity in the literature surrounding approaches to successful engage men with mental health services. Often, this evidence base is disjointed and lacks international collaboration. We hope this review provides a in depth summary of previous work. Additionally, we identify 7 key techniques that can be used in the future development of help-seeking interventions for men - providing a more rigours, theory driven framework.
