What is it about?

Stigma is the belief that a particular group or class of people are unfit for certain social interactions. This study found that a group of men from all regions of Canada except Quebec had experienced stigma associated with their sex. As men, they were considered to be irresponsible with respect to raising children and a potential threat to women even though none had ever been convicted of any crimes including neglect or assault. This study did not measure how widespread this stigma exists in the population.

Why is it important?

Although stigma has been studied with respect to many other groups, it had not been previously applied to the study of men.

Perspectives

It is my hope that this study will contribute to the breaking down of barriers to men as fathers and in professions that are meant to enhance family.
