What is it about?

Pubic hair grooming is becoming increasingly popular. Here we show that roughly 50% of all US men regularly groom their pubic hair. Most men reported that they groom for sex (73%), particularly oral sex, but here we display a graph that shows motivations among different age groups (18-65). Results of this study may allow clinicians, sex educators, and therapists to better counsel and understand patients with grooming concerns.

Why is it important?

The intent of the current study is to provide information on common grooming practices to better inform clinicians who may be called to address issues of genital grooming in men.

Perspectives

When we first started this project, we had anticipated that grooming would be common in women. What shocked us most was how prevalent it was in men (both gay and straight). From our survey, it is evident that women groom for "routine hygiene" whereas men tend to groom more often for sex. The numbers from this paper will lay the foundation for future research we we explore the relationship between pubic hair grooming and associated injuries and infections.
