What is it about?

My aim in this article was to find a way of thinking about how gamers interact with the changing visual space of a game. I wanted to pay attention to both the game design, its mechanics and the input from players. Rather than holding them apart, I argued the two co-operate - hence the title: recursive space.

Why is it important?

The paper is an addition to thinking about gaming because it pays attention to the technology of the game as well as the gamer. These are ideas remain in their infancy, and so this paper is a starting point in a potentially fruitful debate.

Perspectives

I enjoyed writing this paper because it allowed me to think beyond the obviousness of space in games (what's represented), and to look at how space comes into being because of what a player does and what the game does.
