What is it about?

The importance of the cosmetic appreciation of Autologous Fat Transfer (AFT) in breast surgery is surpassed only by the shear difference therein between patients and surgeons. This difference was quantified by looking at photo-based interrater-agreement between different surgeon and laymen study groups in which we found that the augmentation patient is least likely to share the surgeons cosmetic appreciation.

Why is it important?

This is the first study that evaluates the cosmetic appreciation of an increasingly popular procedure in plastic surgery. By quantifying the difference between what the doctor qualifies as "beautiful" and what the patients view thereof is, we laid the groundwork for further studies that can focus on "what" constitutes this difference. By aligning the physician and patient expectations, it is the authors hope that this might benefit the preoperative consultation.

Perspectives

It has been a pleasure to write this article and an honour to work with such a diverse and sophisticated group of co-authors. We hope this article may be an interesting read for those interested in AFT.
