What is it about?

This personal reflection is a story about heritage. As Myron Madden put it heritage is about claiming the intangible gifts both good and bad passed on from one generation to the next. In this story I remember those good and bad traits my grandmother passed on to me. It is also a story about the importance of taking time to say good-bye.

Why is it important?

This story reflects the importance of grieving and of claiming one's individuality by accepting all-good and bad-that our ancestors leave to us.

Perspectives

In the story I visit my grandmother who is living out the final stages of Alzheimer's in a nursing home. She cannot speak except for her moans and groans, but I come to say good-bye to in a one-way conversation her remembering the times we shared together.
