What is it about?

This article is a case report describing the use of frankincense extract to manage bladder cancer. Although the patient experience cancer recurrence twice during the first year after diagnosis and surgical removal of tumors, the patient has not detectible cancer since the second recurrence in the last 14 months without side effects. Along with our previous publications, frankincense extract can have cancer cell-specific killing thorough multiple pathways, and activate host immune responses to fight against cancers.

Why is it important?

If we can further demonstrate that frankincense extract can execute multiple pathways and host immune responses against cancers in more patients with cancers, frankincense extract might be a botanical agent that can help cancer patients with much of side effects today rather than many years in the future.

Perspectives

Modern scientific technologies including analytical chemistry, molecular biology, and techniques developed in post-genomic era can be use to conduct research in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Traditional Chinese herbal medicine needs to be modernized and standardized to meet modern medicine guideline in order to provide consistent and reliable clinical outcomes.
