What is it about?
THL, a Chinese herbal mixture, has been shown to have various anti-cancer activities. In this study, we further show that THL can enhance antitumor immunity. We found that THL can enhance the tumor-killing activity of natural killer cells and cytotoxic T cells and increase the secretion of IFN-gamma, IL-2 and TNF-alpha in mice vaccinated with gamma ray-irradiated tumor cells. These results suggest that THL may be used as a complementary medicine for cancer patients previously treated with irradiated apoptotic tumor cell vaccines, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy.

Why is it important?
Herbal mixture THL has been used as a complementary medicine by many cancer patients all over the world. This study shows that the main mechanism underlying its anti-cancer activity is its ability to enhance anti-tumor immune responses.
Perspectives
Herbal mixture THL have been shown to improve life quality and survival rate of late-stage cancer patients. This may be primarily due to its ability to enhance anti-tumor immunity. Both chemotherapy and radiotherapy can induce tumor cell apoptosis. The tumor antigens in the apoptotic cells may be processed and presented by professional antigen-presenting cells and induce antigen-specific immune response in the presence of immuno-enhancing agents such as THL.
