Why is it important?

Man caves, the television show and cultural practice are good places to look for the latest developments in masculinity. Masculinity is a cultural performance and it changes over time. Thus, looking at man caves can tell us about what cultural producers think men need to do to be men. Above all, although man caves may be fun to make, a leisure diversion from daily life, male-exclusive spaces have also been used to justify the degradation of and even violence against women. We also view the many contradictions visible on the show regarding masculinity as a sort of last gasp of the kind of masculinity that supports patriarchy.

Perspectives

I think this article can help people understand the ways that masculinity is performed on television and wider culture, given the challenges to patriarchy that feminism and other social movements have posed, and even the critiques of patriarchal masculinity that men have.
