What is it about?

Organ transplant is a life-saving treatment; however, there is a need for more people to sign up on the organ donor registry. Many people have misconceptions about organ donation which are barriers to signing up. We trained members of alumni chapters of African American fraternities and sororities to give educational presentations on organ donation. We also used tailored newsletters to address barriers.

Why is it important?

We found that study participants in the intervention group were more likely to sign up on the organ donor registry than those in the control group. This finding suggests that peer leaders can increase sign ups to the registry among sorority and fraternity members. Furthermore, alumni chapters of sororities and fraternities are a novel setting for providing education on organ donation.

Perspectives

I enjoyed collaborating with exceptional academic and community partners to write this article. I hope it communicates the need for more organ donors and the value of peer leaders.
