What is it about?
Improving blood supply to a lower limb indirectly through the venous system (yes, that is backwards!)
Featured Image
Why is it important?
May allow limbs with poor circulation to be saved that cannot be by conventional means
Perspectives
Peripheral artery disease and diabetes are increasing throughout the world. Some patient end up with chronic limb threatening ischemia, a condition in which the blood supply to the lower leg and foot is so blocked that patients develop non-healing ulcers and gangrene and are at high risk for major amputation. Although still unproven, this novel technique may help save some limbs that are not able to be saved by well-established, conventional techniques of arterial angioplasty, stent and surgical bypass techniques.
