What is it about?

Discusses how women practice leadership in the African cultural context where tradition and modernity coexist in a state of complexity and flux. Ubuntu provides the philosophical foundation for a leadership that is imbued with compassion, collegiality and concern for community.

Why is it important?

The African context continuous to be under-represented in discussions and conceptualizations of leadership, and when we do read about it, it's from a pathologizing perspective (e.g. disease, poverty, corruption) rather than from the perspective of 'what works'.

Perspectives

I continue to be inspired by the lives and leadership practices of African women, particularly of the 'boomer' generation who set the stage for later generations by breaking many barriers to lead communities and organizations towards a prosperous future.
