What is it about?
This article critically reviews the literature on morality policies and the politics of values, focusing in particular on the question of what defines morality policies as a specific policy field. After reviewing existing definitions, the article develops a new approach that draws on political theory and pays particular attention to the role of religion, arguing that morality policies reflect deep divisions within modern societies over key principles of political liberalism.

Why is it important?
Value-based conflicts are becoming more common and more intense in several Western countries. In order to resolve these conflicts, we need to better understand them. This article makes a contribution to a better understanding of value-based conflicts by highlighting, in particular, the role of religion therein.
Perspectives
This publication is the first step in a new research agenda I am developing, and which will provide the basis for my Habilitation in political science.
