What is it about?

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the recent developments in the higher education system of Colombia in order to illustrate how these encourage stratification between (types of) universities and their students. We do so by discussing propositions generated by human capital theory and apply them to the experiences of students and graduates from Colombian universities.

Why is it important?

The human capital theory doesn't take in to account the qualilty of education, so if tt supposes quality of education is homogeneoes between universities. So, some of its main assertions should be questioned, because not everyone who invest in tertiary education get the positive returns of this investment people because the quality of education differs between institutions. In some cases, instead of positive returns, there are cases of discriminatios, for example, in the market labor.
