What is it about?

Managing diabetes is frequently seen as a solitary endeavour. Guidance from healthcare professionals can be limited. For ethnic minorities this is a major problem. A recent study among Guyanese dismissed the long term condition as 'a touch of sugar'.

Why is it important?

Successful management of a long term condition depends on how well it is self managed. Input from healthcare professionals is a key factor in this.

Perspectives

The study gave voice to those with a long term condition as to how best it can be managed. My research group of Guyanese women had not previously given voice to their lived experience. The opportunity to do so led to improvement in how they self managed their condition. As a Guyanese woman myself I understood the need to dispel myths such as 'a touch of sugar' from the perspectives of both patients and healthcare professionals.
