What is it about?

This is a systematic review of research in international educational leadership in international schools. That means, that it has attempted to compile all of the research to date on this school sector.

Why is it important?

With over 5 million students worldwide, this demographic represents the school population of a developed Western country, the size of say Spain. Yet despite this enormous market, the leadership and policy of these schools remains a big unknown, with relatively little known. This review, collates all the research done so far.

Perspectives

The field of international schools research emerges here as one that is cast in a positivist light, typical of the mid 20th century. That is to say, from a social theory point of view, the work is generally functionalist, with a leaning towards objectivity and generalisation. there is little if any attempt to really look into the historical or cultural detail of what these schools are. This review takes a critical stance, and reviews the literature accordingly, drawing upon Bourdieu, and the concept of Distinction.
