What is it about?

Academic associations at European level have increased in numbers and roles. What is their mission? For some scholars it is achieving legitimacy, for others defending the academic profession, for some others lobbying in relation with policy makers. This papers analyses 324 European academic associations and points to a more complex, nuanced and at times unexpected landscape. It illustrates how academic associations are located in a center-periphery continuum and the implications thereof for the governance of higher education and research.
