What is it about?

Courage was central to the thought and practice of MK Gandhi, eminent leader of India's freedom struggle. This centrality was based on martial and maternal elements which did not get fully synthesized because of Gandhi's inability to free himself completely from certain features of militant nationalist thought.

Why is it important?

Though Gandhi's thought is interpreted in different ways, it is generally assumed that it is coherent and diametrically opposite the militant nationalist thought. The article shows the continuities between the two being responsible for the inconsistencies central to Gandhi's thought.

Perspectives

This article marks an important departure from my analysis of Gandhi's thought in the last chapter of my book on the modern commentaries on the Gita. It does not reject that analysis but adds an important dimension missing there.
