What is it about?

There is a lot of buzz about the so called sharing economy. This paper shows why the concept is ill founded conceptually, and why available social science concepts are better tools for analysis and critique of phenomena associated with this popular meme.

Why is it important?

It is important to understand that an economy is built on several different kinds of social relationships, including those best understood as part of the theory of the Gift. This is crucial for dealing with such critical issues as climate change and global inequality. This paper helps to inject these ideas into a debate that has gone wrong because of the red herring that the "sharing economy" inserts into debate and innovation.

Perspectives

Classic social science theory is useful for solving intractable real world problems, problems that economics cannot solve.
