Why is it important?

The "Early Warning System" was put in place, in part, to increase democratic input into the operation of the European Union. This is the first study to examine directly the effect of public attitudes of the usage of the "Early Warning System," thus increasing our knowledge of not only policy processes in the EU, but also of the role of democracy in the operation of the EU.

Perspectives

This piece shows that public attitudes regarding the European Union and the process of integration do in fact influence the process of policy-making in the EU. That is to say, the public actually affects the policy-making process in the EU. This is a relatively good sign for democracy in the EU, and suggests that member state policy-makers do listen to the public regarding European integration.
