What is it about?

Instagram is a photo and video-sharing social media app that has become increasingly popular in recent years. This paper studies how people who have an Instagram account compare to people without an account in terms of their depression, anxiety, loneliness, and self-esteem. This paper additionally looks what factors play a role in negative psychological outcomes for Instagram users.

Why is it important?

Instagram is a relatively new social media application and has become as pervasive in the lives of social media users as older sites, yet little research has examined its influence. Its novelty and its unique interface make it a social networking site with possible psychological consequences, yet older social media sites tend to dominate the existing pool of psychological research. This study attempts to fill this gap in the literature by examining Instagram's association with psychological well-being.
