What is it about?

Foursquare is a location-based social network (LBSN) that allows people to share their location with friends by ‘checking-in’ at a given place using their smartphone. Drawing on original research with a number of Foursquare users this paper examines the different ways this LBSN is used to present the self.

Why is it important?

While there is a body of research that explores locative media in the context of space and place, there is limited research that examines locative media and identity. Addressing this gap is the chief aim of this paper.

Perspectives

This paper explores how the location-based social network, Foursquare, is used to present the self through the sharing of location. In so doing it casts a light on emergent practices that revolve around identity, place and locative media.
