What is it about?
Traumatic injury is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. People who sustain serious chest injury due to road traffic accidents, falls, natural disasters or assault are admitted to hospital for appropriate assessment and treatment. Physiotherapists form part of the inter-professional team that are responsible for the care of such patients. This paper describes the types of patient assessment and treatment strategies used by physiotherapists who work in major trauma units across the world. It is the first report of its kind.

Why is it important?
Physiotherapy is an evidence-based profession. This paper describes the current global physiotherapy management of patients with serious chest injury by experienced physiotherapy clinicians. It provides a platform from which further research in this specific patient population can be conducted.
Perspectives
Working on this project with colleagues in South Africa, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand was very enjoyable and created a wonderful opportunity for me to learn more from these experienced physiotherapy researchers and clinicians. We hope that readers will find this paper interesting and will be encouraged to engage in more clinical research in the field of physiotherapy and trauma.
