What is it about?

this paper uses data collected between 2002 and 2014 to examine the associations between family wealth and the educational and employment outcomes of young adults. Do all Australians have a good chance of achieving high levels of education, prestigious jobs and wealth? Do family circumstances predict outcomes? Does our education system alleviate the disadvantage associated with low family wealth?

Why is it important?

Australia was generally resgarded as an egalitarian society where family background did not inhibit one's ability to achieve. This paper uses recent data to show that disadvantage experienced during childhood impacts on levels of advantage in adulthood. In other words, relying on education to alleviate disadvantage is not working therefore, an examination of current policies is warranted.
