What is it about?

Galloping is one type of critical wind-induced oscillation of slender structures with non-circular cross-sections. There are many factors influencing on galloping amplitude and critical wind velocity including static horizontal tension, span length, wind speed, and so on. This paper focus on temperature. An analytical model is also proposed to systematically study the effect of temperature on galloping amplitude of iced conductors.

Why is it important?

Our findings shows the thermal stress may have effects on galloping amplitude and that the temperature effects should not be neglected. Furthermore, the effect of temperature on galloping amplitude is related to static horizontal tension, span length and wind speed, and a positive temperature change does not necessarily decrease the galloping amplitude.

Perspectives

This paper reminds that the effect of temperature on the wind-induced dynamic response of transmission lines is also need to be paid attention to.
