Why is it important?
Karl-Otto Apel was one of the most outstanding German philosophers of the late 20th century who, as mentor and friend of Juergen Habermas, made a fundamental contribution to Frankfurt Critical Theory. Among other things, he helped revive interest in Charles S Peirce, the founder of American pragmatism, and simultaneously established the currently topical relation between Critical Theory and pragmatism.
Perspectives
Besides the massive intellectual impact that Karl-Otto's thought has had on my own sociological and philosophical work, his decisive stand against the Nazi atrocities and his complete commitment to democracy and communicative ethics fundamentally shaped my self-understanding as an ethical exile from Apartheid South Africa.
