What is it about?

Does inter-Asia globalization eventually make Asia a cosmopolitan home for Asian migrant workers? To an extent, globalized Asia has served as a context for mixed marriages between migrant workers and the emergence of hybrid cultures. On the other hand, for certain migrant workers, the cosmopolitanism they experience remains precarious and contingent to the flows of trans-national capital and the the policies of sending and receiving countries.

Why is it important?

With the onset of ASEAN Economic Community it is important to critically evaluate what is at stake in opening up the space for inter-Southeast Asian work migration. This article examines the possibilities as well as limit of home-making for Southeast Asian people working outside their respective countries in the region. The case studies examined are families of Filipino and Indonesian professional workers, as well as Filipino and Indonesia migrant workers, who make Singapore their alternative home
