Disability support workers may be involved in relationship mediation for people with disabilities. This paper describes such a role, and explores it using recognition theory (Axel Honneth) and emotion work (Arlie Russell Hochschild).

Why is it important?

The role of emotion work in recognition has not previously been identified; emotion work of disability support workers is an under-researched area; there are potential impacts on practice and policy for making the link between recognition, emotion work and care and support roles.

Perspectives

Identifying the link between emotion work and recognition theory clarified an important way to understand the role of disability support workers (and is applicable to other forms of care and support work). There are implications for practice.
