What is it about?

Healthcare professionals working in rural areas often face demanding workloads, limited resources, and emotionally challenging situations that can increase stress and affect their well-being. This study examined how emotional intelligence and resilience are associated with perceived stress among rural healthcare professionals in India. Using survey data from healthcare workers, we investigated whether individuals with higher emotional intelligence and greater resilience experience lower levels of perceived stress. The findings indicate that both emotional intelligence and resilience play important roles in helping healthcare professionals manage workplace stress. Emotional intelligence enables individuals to recognize, understand, and regulate emotions, while resilience helps them adapt and recover from difficult situations. The study highlights the importance of developing these psychological strengths through training and organizational support. Strengthening emotional intelligence and resilience may improve healthcare workers' mental well-being, job satisfaction, and their ability to deliver quality patient care, particularly in resource-constrained rural healthcare settings.

Why is it important?

Rural healthcare professionals are essential to strengthening public health systems, yet they often work under difficult conditions with limited resources and high emotional demands. This study provides evidence that emotional intelligence and resilience are associated with lower perceived stress among these professionals. The findings have practical implications for healthcare organizations, hospital administrators, policymakers, and training institutions. Integrating emotional intelligence and resilience-building programs into professional development initiatives may help reduce stress, improve workforce well-being, decrease burnout, and enhance the quality of patient care. The study also contributes to the growing evidence on psychological resources that support sustainable healthcare systems in low-resource settings.

Perspectives

Working with healthcare professionals has reinforced my appreciation of the emotional and psychological challenges they encounter every day, especially in rural settings where resources are often limited. This research was motivated by the belief that improving healthcare outcomes also requires supporting the well-being of those who provide care. I hope this study encourages researchers, healthcare leaders, and policymakers to recognize emotional intelligence and resilience as valuable skills that can be developed through education, training, and supportive workplace practices. Investing in the mental well-being of healthcare professionals ultimately benefits patients, organizations, and communities.
