What is it about?

The article is about how assessment for learning (AfL) is realised in PE and what the pedagogical approach does to the triadic relationship between teacher, student and subject content. The concept of AfL may take different forms in the teaching practice of PE, with different possible implications.

Why is it important?

In an era of evaluation, measurement and competition, assessment for learning is a possible counterweight to other forms of assessment with the purpose of accountability. The study shows what might happen "on the ground" when some PE teachers both try to promote student learning and ensure a fair grading through AfL. The major contribution of the article is the unpacking of the concept, enabling critical reflections about its possible implications.

Perspectives

This article views AfL from some Swedish PE teachers' perspective. A forthcoming article digs deeper into the formative assessment practice of PE, by including both lesson observations and interviews with students as well as teachers. So, keep your eyes open, if you are interested!
