What is it about?
In a convergence culture, which shows how old technology is integrated into new technology, the article shows how people who hold old technology (videocassettes) choose to separate technology (converted digital content) from media (the VHS tapes). By doing so, they give a new symbolic value and magic force to the tapes as a new memory object and the digital content converted from the videocassettes is used to strengthen family ties. The study offers a model of media separation (divergence) and offers a new terminology to explain the process of separation, which is part of the convergence culture.
