This is a review of neuromodulation applications in multiple sclerosis including intrathecal baclofen pump, functional electrical stimulation, deep brain stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, bladder stimulation, and brain computer interface.

Why is it important?

The field of multiple sclerosis (MS) has largely been fousing on immunomodulation for the past two decades. Clinical and experimental utilization of advanced technology for restoration of function and neurorehab in MS lags behind other neurological subspecialties such as movemnt disorders and cord injury. With the recent advances in disease modifying therapy, it is time to shift the clinical and research interests of the field to neuromodulation and restorative therapy.

Perspectives

In this review we discuss the available evidence for the different neuromodulation techniques in MS patients and propose future directions to a wider clinical and experimental utilization of such techniques in the future.
