What is it about?
Neuropathic pruritus (NP) is a frequent symptom in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). Patients with this manifestation may benefit with an anti-AQP4 antibody (AQP4-ab) test. However, not all patients with pruritus will be positive for AQP4-ab. Of 227 (four large series about NMOSD associated with NP) patients with NMOSD, 83 had pruritus. Sixty-four out of 83 patients were positive for AQP4-ab. In addition, 19 AQP4-ab negative patients had pruritus (23%). Therefore, further studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis and will help to improve clinical diagnosis and pathogenic understanding of NP.
