What is it about?

The article is based on a research on the presence of women as film directors in Turkish cinema. After a historical overview, it investigates the reasons of the increase in the number of women directors since 2005; analyzes their films and suggests some measures, like cultural policies, for the sustainability of this increase.

Why is it important?

There is an important lack of quantitative data both on film industry and gender issues in Turkey, as well as on qualitative analyzes of women's works. The article investigates also the conditions of filmmaking for young producers and constitute a source for policy makers on cultural and artistic areas.

Perspectives

This article constitutes a first step for my future research on the presence and the creativity of women in Turkish film and media industries. I will update the data collection and analyse that I started for this research and develop my problematics to launch new studies aiming to understand (and contributing to improve, I hope) women's creative works in these industries.
