This article reports on a survey of journalism academics and practising journalists in Australia, which found that they predominately share views about the role of journalism.

The authors suggest that in the interests of the journalism industry’s future, the Australian academy should differentiate itself from the industry’s immediate needs and be more forward thinking in its work.
Perspectives
Alex Wake has been a journalist for almost 30 years and an academic for 15. She's worked in print, radio, television and online in Australia, South Africa, Ireland, and the United Arab Emirates. She continues to work as a freelance broadcaster, but teaches full time at RMIT University. In 2011 she was the Asia Pacific Academic Fellow for the Dart Centre. Her PhD was on journalism education by Australians, outside Australia's national borders, and her research is focused on the teaching of journalism skills.
